canelo alvarez retirement conclusion

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez is set to make a momentous announcement concerning his illustrious boxing career this Tuesday, as revealed by Boxing Scene’s Jake Donovan.

Having not graced the ring since his decisive victory over Jermell Charlo last September, speculation abounds regarding the nature of Álvarez’s forthcoming revelation. While retirement looms as a plausible inference, be it a temporary hiatus or a more permanent departure, the capricious nature of retirements in boxing prompts conjecture.

Yet, for a pugilistic luminary of Álvarez’s caliber, there exists a palpable inclination against culminating his storied journey with a seemingly facile triumph over a lesser opponent. Moreover, the resounding declaration he made in prior statements hardly hinted at a readiness to initiate a denouement to his remarkable career.

The more plausible scenario seems to entail Álvarez unveiling details about his next boxing bout. Traditionally, he has adhered to a pattern of competing around Cinco de Mayo, an annual tradition that garners considerable anticipation. However, this announcement appears to arrive earlier than anticipated, deviating from the timeline set in the preceding years.

While speculation abounds regarding potential opponents, negotiations with Jaime Munguía, one of the contenders, have yet to progress significantly, dampening the likelihood of a comprehensive announcement by Tuesday.

As fans eagerly await Álvarez’s revelation, the ambiguity surrounding the teaser for Tuesday’s announcement necessitates a tempered approach. It’s prudent for enthusiasts to temper their expectations, recognizing the possibility of an outcome diverging from their fervent desires.

Canelo Alvarez Career highlights

In a pivotal match for the WBC Silver light middleweight title at the Vicente Fernández Arena, Canelo Álvarez secured a sixth-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over Luciano Leonel Cuello. Following this triumph, Álvarez received a notable gift from Mexican singer Vicente Fernández—a horse—during the post-fight interview. Additionally, the mayor of Tepic, where Álvarez occasionally trains, also presented him with a horse.

Subsequently, Álvarez faced the former WBC welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Despite Baldomir’s pre-fight declarations, Álvarez emerged victorious with a sixth-round knockout, becoming only the second boxer to stop Carlos Baldomir and the first to knock him out.

Álvarez continued his success by defending his light middleweight title against Lovemore N’dou in Veracruz, securing a unanimous decision victory. However, his anticipated title bout against the winner of the vacant WBC light middleweight title was derailed when Manny Pacquiao, the victor, declined to defend the title, resulting in its vacancy.

On 5 March 2011, Álvarez defeated European welterweight champion Matthew Hatton via unanimous decision, claiming the vacant WBC light middleweight belt. He subsequently defended his title against Ryan Rhodes, securing a TKO victory in the twelfth round.

In his next defense, Álvarez faced Alfonso Gómez, winning via TKO in the sixth round after a competitive match where Gómez won the majority of the first five rounds.

Álvarez’s journey continued with notable victories over Kermit Cintrón and Shane Mosley, cementing his dominance in the ring. However, challenges emerged when his scheduled opponent, Paul Williams, suffered a career-ending injury, leading to a matchup against Victor Ortiz. Despite the change, Álvarez emerged victorious, defeating Ortiz via fifth-round TKO.

His subsequent fight against Austin Trout at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, marked another significant milestone in Álvarez’s career. Defeating Trout, he successfully defended his WBC light middleweight title and secured the WBA (Regular) and vacant Ring light middleweight titles. Despite controversy surrounding the judges’ scorecards, Álvarez’s impressive performance solidified his status as a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world.

Canelo Alvarez vs Floyd Mayweather

In a highly anticipated showdown between two titans of the sport, Canelo Álvarez, Ring magazine’s #1 ranked light middleweight and the unified WBA (Regular) and WBC champion, faced off against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Ring magazine’s #1 pound-for-pound fighter and holder of the WBA (Super) light middleweight and WBC welterweight titles, on 14 September 2013.

Mayweather, moving up in weight to meet Álvarez, held both welterweight and light middleweight titles, with the fight contested at a catchweight of 152 lbs. Despite Álvarez’s formidable presence and a sold-out crowd at the MGM Garden, Mayweather emerged victorious via majority decision.

The judges’ scorecards reflected Mayweather’s dominance, with C. J. Ross scoring the bout 114–114, Dave Moretti at 116–112, and Craig Metcalfe at 117–111 in Mayweather’s favor. While the draw on one scorecard raised eyebrows, Mayweather’s superior performance was evident in CompuBox stats, where he landed 232 of 505 punches compared to Álvarez’s 117 of 526 thrown.

With Mayweather’s guaranteed earnings at $41.5 million compared to Álvarez’s $5 million, the fight not only showcased Mayweather’s skill but also underscored his status as one of boxing’s most lucrative draws.

Canelo Alvarez vs Gennedy Golovkin

Álvarez made a pivotal announcement regarding his boxing career, revealing his next opponent, Gennady Golovkin, for a bout scheduled on 16 September 2017. Golovkin, although absent from the announcement, joined Álvarez in the ring to promote their impending clash.

The anticipation for this showdown reached a crescendo as Álvarez confidently declared, “Golovkin, you are next, my friend.” Golovkin reciprocated the excitement, acknowledging Álvarez as the biggest challenge of his career and promising a “big drama show” come September.

As details emerged, it was disclosed that Álvarez had secured an immediate rematch clause in his contract, while Golovkin’s rematch was not guaranteed in case of defeat. Furthermore, the fight would take place at the full middleweight limit of 160 lbs with no rehydration clauses, allowing both fighters to gain weight post-weigh-in.

The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was chosen as the venue, marking Golovkin’s debut in Nevada. Despite some logistical adjustments regarding sanctioning fees and weigh-in protocols, the event garnered significant attention, with tickets selling out swiftly.

On fight night, a sold-out crowd witnessed a thrilling encounter between Álvarez and Golovkin, culminating in a split draw. While Álvarez’s victory was disputed by some due to a controversial scorecard, the bout was hailed as a classic by many media outlets.

Post-fight, Golovkin affirmed his championship status, while Álvarez expressed frustration over the draw and hinted at a potential rematch in the future. The fight’s financial success further underscored its significance, with record-breaking gate receipts and substantial pay-per-view buys, solidifying both fighters’ legacies in the sport.

Following the contentious conclusion of their initial encounter, discussions swiftly began for a rematch between Álvarez and Golovkin. Álvarez declared his intention to fight in May 2018, while Golovkin expressed readiness for a bout as early as December 2017. ESPN reported that Álvarez, equipped with the rematch clause, had to activate it within three weeks of their first fight.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez affirmed their interest in the rematch, initiating talks with Golovkin’s team. Amid negotiations, the WBC officially ordered a rematch, further intensifying the anticipation. Despite Álvarez’s positive test for clenbuterol and subsequent suspension, talks for the rematch persisted.

However, complications arose regarding purse split negotiations, with Álvarez initially seeking a 65-35 split in his favor. After various offers and counteroffers, including a proposed 57½–42½ split, terms were eventually agreed upon, leading to the rematch being confirmed for 15 September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The rematch encountered further obstacles as Golovkin was stripped of his IBF title due to rule violations. Despite this setback, negotiations continued, with Álvarez ultimately securing a 45% split. The lead-up to the fight was marked by anticipation and controversy, with the vacant Ring middleweight title also up for grabs.

In front of a capacity crowd, Álvarez emerged victorious via majority decision after twelve closely contested rounds. The decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, reflecting the intensity of the bout. Despite differing opinions on the outcome, both fighters expressed mutual respect after the fight, with Álvarez extending an invitation for a potential trilogy.

The rematch, although generating slightly lower gate receipts and pay-per-view buys than the first bout, solidified the rivalry between Álvarez and Golovkin, setting the stage for a possible third encounter.

Despite Álvarez expressing his desire to avenge his loss against WBA (Super) light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in a rematch,[253] on 24 May 2022 it was announced that Álvarez would instead be returning to the super middleweight division to defend his undisputed titles against Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy bout on 17 September. The bout would see Golovkin, the WBA (Super) and IBF middleweight champion, compete in the super middleweight division for the first time in his career, while it was Álvarez’s sixth bout in the same weight class.[257]

In the first pre-fight press conference on 25 June 2022 in Los Angeles, Álvarez described the rivalry between him and Golovkin as “personal” rather than simply competitive. Álvarez stated of his opponent: “He always pretends to be a nice guy but he’s an asshole. He’s an asshole person… He’s talking a lot of things about me. That’s why it’s personal.” Álvarez went on to express his excitement at the prospect of sending his opponent into retirement, and admitted that he received gratification from making Golovkin wait four years for a trilogy bout on his own terms, in his preferred weight class of super middleweight: “It makes me feel good.”[258][259]

On fight night, Álvarez defeated Golovkin via unanimous decision with the scores of 115–113 (twice) and 116–112.
