Rolly Romero says Isaac Cruz is harder to beat than Ryan Garcia

Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, the reigning WBA junior welterweight champion with a professional record of 15 wins and 1 loss, has decided to face Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in his upcoming bout rather than Ryan Garcia, who has a record of 24 wins and 1 loss.

Romero, aged 28 and hailing from Las Vegas, was initially linked to a fight with Garcia following Garcia’s victory over Oscar Duarte in December. However, Romero opted to pursue a match against Cruz, aged 25, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 30.

Meanwhile, Garcia accepted a bout against Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney, the current WBC junior welterweight champion and former undisputed lightweight champion, scheduled for April 20 in Las Vegas.

Romero defended his decision, asserting that Cruz presents a more challenging opponent compared to Garcia. He highlighted Cruz’s durability, punching power, and aggressive fighting style. Romero anticipates an action-packed bout, referring to it as a “Mexican slugfest.”

Cruz has established himself as a resilient contender with an engaging fighting style, having notably gone the distance with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in December 2021, despite ultimately losing the fight.

Reflecting on his choice to face Cruz, Romero emphasized his independence from pressure, noting that Golden Boy, Garcia’s promotion team, attempted to secure a fight with him. Romero also praised Al Haymon for offering him favorable terms compared to what Garcia received from DAZN.

In a recent interview, Romero reiterated his belief that Cruz represents a more formidable opponent, highlighting Cruz’s strength, durability, and excitement factor in the ring. He asserted that his decision to face Cruz demonstrates his courage and determination as a fighter.
